How Does Hydronic Underfloor Heating Work?

Hydronic underfloor heating uses warm water to efficiently and effectively create an optimal environment. A system of copper or plastic pipes is interwoven beneath the floor, within the walls or above the roof surface. The pipes are arranged to provide an even and economically achieved temperature distribution. It feels like magic, but it isn’t. It isn’t even difficult to understand.

Of course you can use hydronic systems to cool your home or work space also. To achieve this we use chilled water instead. You’ll usually need a dedicated chiller as part of your solution, however we’ll talk about this aspect some other time.

The Components of Hydronic Underfloor Heating

The components of a hydronic underfloor heating system are:

  • A network of pipes delivering heat to conditioned spaces and buried within the floor structure.
  • A heat source such as a boiler, heat pump or solar system.
  • A pump to drive the water around the pipework.
  • Thermostats and controllers to maintain room temperatures at desired comfort levels.

The Benefits of This Heating Solution

Though there are several ways to heat your home, underfloor heating is by far the best choice. It has the following advantages over conventional heating systems:

  • You can achieve an even temperature distribution across the entire heated space. The pipework lattice spans the entire room and the heat is not dissipated as it moves away from the single source (such as you would experience with a radiator or air conditioner).
  • Lower operating temperatures means you save money over time. A lower energy requirement to heat the water will save you money whatever your energy source.
  • Underfloor heating is invisible and non-intrusive. From an interior design perspective you have more options and space to exercise your creativity and problem solving.
As an installer you will save build time. Hydronic underfloor heating systems are fast to deploy, reducing your costs.
  • Underfloor heating systems require little or no maintenance, increasing reliability and reducing expense.
  • They also have a long lifespan. This means you don’t have to worry about replacing your heating system for a very, very long time.

When it comes to choosing the right heating system for your home, comfort, flexibility and cost are usually at the forefront of the decision making process. With hydronic underfloor heating, you achieve all three, with other added benefits also.
